In a culture that fosters integrity, you can look forward to the chance to collaborate with people from across our business and rewards that drive performance. Just as important, you’ll have opportunities to take part in different activities that give back to local communities.

We'll invest in your development

Our dedicated Learning and Development team will ensure you have everything you need to develop your abilities and achieve your full potential. This means you’ll have a wide variety of opportunities to build on your skills to meet both professional and personal challenges.

We'll adapt to your needs

We believe a strong work, life balance enables you to perform at your best. That’s why, where possible, we try to offer alternative work arrangements, such as part time hours, job share options and term time working.

We also take part in the Britain’s Healthiest Workplace competition and use this to benchmark our progress and success.

We'll recognise your great work

When you go the extra mile for us, we’re committed to do the same for you. So, our reward and recognition system is designed to acknowledge your hard work and dedication, including quarterly awards for Managers, individuals and teams.

We'll invest in your health and wellbeing

This is one of the key services we offer to clients, so naturally, we put your wellbeing at the top of our agenda.

Our COO sponsors our Health and Wellbeing Committee. This employee-led group implements programmes and initiatives that help target the health risks affecting our employees.

You’ll be offered six-monthly health checks that measure your height, weight, cholesterol, BMI and blood glucose levels. You can also access our wellbeing platform and app, which includes tracking tools to support a healthy lifestyle.

We also take part in the Britain’s Healthiest Workplace competition and use this to benchmark our progress and success.

We'll invest in your mental wellbeing

We believe your mental health is as important as your physical health. So, in 2016, we worked with Mind to produce Added Value: mental health as a workplace asset. We followed this up with an initiative to enable some of our senior leaders to share what they do to look after their mental wellbeing.

In short, we aim to make this not only a great place to work, but one that supports your health and wellbeing so you can be your best.

We'll offer you help where we can

Unum LifeWorks is a completely confidential employee assistance programme that’s available to all our employees and their immediate family, 24 hours a day. Whether you’re looking for support, information or resources, Unum LifeWorks is here to help.

How we can support others as a business

Quite simply, corporate social responsibility means a lot to us. A strong commitment to being a responsible business is one of our core values. We focus on providing a positive and effective contribution to the communities in which we live and work.

We see helping our communities as a natural extension of the commitment we make each and every day to our customers. Our activities in the UK centre around three key pillars of community involvement:

Our efforts include corporate giving and volunteer support for school programmes, and education and mentoring relationships with young people in our local communities.

Health and wellbeing

We understand the importance of health and wellbeing and seek to provide charitable donations and other activities to support the health of children and adults in our local communities. In addition, as a leading provider of disability benefits, we have a strong understanding of the complex challenges created by disabilities in our communities. We are committed to aiding young people and families who are confronting those challenges through charitable donations and volunteering opportunities.

Arts and culture

We supports organisations that embrace creative expression in our local communities, from displaying public art in our offices to sponsoring local festivals and other cultural programmes that enhance the community.

We're proud to support ...

We form two-year charity partnerships that enable us to make a big difference in the communities where we work. The charities we support are selected by our employees and the only restriction we place on them is that they must support one of our three key pillars: education, health and wellbeing, or arts and culture.

An inclusive workplace

As a diverse and inclusive employer, we aim to employ people who reflect the communities and customers we serve. Whatever your background, you’ll appreciate the opportunities we give you to work in an inclusive atmosphere, where everyone can reach their full potential.

We welcome people who can bring distinctive thinking and unique contributions to our work. People whose different perspectives and varied experiences combine to develop more creative products and services.

People whose diversity of thought, viewpoints and ideas help us overcome challenges, embrace the possibilities and develop into a stronger business.

We believe this approach enables us to better understand the needs of our customers, as well as meeting their expectations of working with a diverse partner. Most of all, it brings out the best in our people and makes us more competitive, by attracting top talent who bring energy and creativity to our work.

Supporting Women in Finance

We believe an inclusive workforce is better for our employees, our customers, our shareholders and our communities. To underline this commitment, we’re proud to have signed the HM Treasury Women in Finance Charter. This means we’ve:

  • Set the goal that at least 35% of Unum’s Executive Committee will be female by 2021
  • Linked the pay of our CEO and HR Director to diversity targets
  • Made the CEO our accountable executive for the UK Women in Finance Charter
  • Launched a Women in Leadership programme to develop our high-potential female leaders

When we signed up to the Women in Finance Charter in 2017 we had 20% female representation at our Executive Committee. As of 23rd September 2019, women continue to represent 20% of our Executive Team, almost 37% of our senior management team and 33% at Board level.

Whilst we recognise we still have further work to do, we do believe we are on track to meet our Charter target by our deadline.

This year, in line with our broader Inclusion and Diversity goals and commitment to Gender Equality throughout the organisation, we have also set ourselves an increased target of having at least 40% female representation across our broader senior leadership team (the top 7% of our organisation).

As at 23rd September 2019 we currently have 60 employees at this level, 22 of which are female (36.67%).

We remain committed to building and developing our own internal and external talent. This is evidenced by the two women on our Executive Team, who have progressed up through the company to executive roles as a result of our focus on accelerating and promoting female talent.

We are continuing to invest in developing the capabilities of our internal talent at all levels of our organisation, educating our employees on this important topic, and strengthening our external networking and outreach for future roles that arise.
