Meet some of the team

Andrew. Senior Actuarial Trainee

I love the combination of academic and pragmatic thinking that an actuarial career affords. Working in the pricing team has been a fantastic starting point and allowed me to work closely with underwriting, reinsurance and sales - certainly a wide exposure to different perspectives on the business. My day-to-day work is very varied, though is typically quite analytical.

Professional development is taken very seriously by Unum. As well as the generous study package, which does help to maintain a work life balance, I’ve been able to attend industry events, such as a seminar on product development. The actuarial development programme has strong links to Unum in the US, and I am excited to shortly fly out to Portland, Maine, for a team orientation. If you want exposure to a wide range of actuarial disciplines and to see the impact your work has then Unum is definitely the place for you.

Jonathan. Actuarial Trainee

I joined two and a half years into my actuarial career. Unum is a market leader in their field, so I know the training I’m receiving is second to none. It’s large enough a company that there are plenty of opportunities for me to work in a variety of roles and take on responsibility as I progress. On the other hand, it’s not so large that I feel like a cog in a machine; I get to work with people at all levels across the business and see the impact my work has in the wider context.

Unum’s also a very pleasant place to work day-to-day. The people here are genuinely friendly, helpful and respectful to each other, which is so important. Last and certainly not least, Unum offers a competitive benefits package including some great perks.

Becky. HR Apprentice

I was looking for a career in Human resources, but it seemed that a degree was a must and I wasn’t truly committed to University. But when I came across the Unum HR Apprenticeship scheme, I know this was the perfect opportunity. A big company, gaining on-the-job experience with a qualification at the end. My first couple of weeks were insightful, welcoming and exciting.

I have already been on leadership events, met with different people throughout the company and have been made to feel like part of the team straight away. It has all helped me to learn what my role as an HR Apprentice will include and how important a part I will play. I am really excited to start the apprenticeship course with the knowledge that Unum will give me the support I need to complete it.
