Paul. Group Risk Sales Manager
I joined Unum back in 2003, mainly, as I recall, because of the attractive salary that was on offer. I soon realised though that there’s more to working life than the money. You need to enjoy working with the people around you too - and I’ve been very lucky in that respect. Not everyone can say that after being at the same company for over 14 years.
It's true though. The team at Unum are like an extended family. We celebrate our successes together and are quick to commiserate if someone needs cheering up. I also feel that I’m able to make a difference. I guess it's because I know that working at Unum means I’m genuinely providing the best products in an organisation that prides itself on delivering great customer service. Thinking about it, that’s another good reason why I’m still here!

I joined Unum in 2002. I remember thinking at the time that it had smart offices and were selling unusual insurance products that I’d not come across before. The way I saw it, because the products were different to everyone else’s, it gave me something to really get stuck into.
Unum has some excellent, enthusiastic and ‘can-do’ people on board too, which makes it a great place to work. As well as the people however, the support for personal growth and the employee benefits are brilliant too. They really do try to keep everyone happy and motivated.
Andy. Sales Consultant
I first joined Unum back in 2005 to gain experience of the individual protection market. I later went on to work for a couple of other large insurers, but looking back it's fair to say that I enjoyed my time at Unum a lot more. So much so in fact, that I came back in 2015! This time round I’ve been busy building my knowledge of Group Risk.
My role’s challenging, but hugely enjoyable - and rewarding too. The people I work with are a big part of why I enjoy working at Unum. We’re a small team with individual targets and a great team spirit. We really support each other and benefit from each other’s knowledge and experience. If I had to sum up what makes Unum such a great place to work, I’d say it’s our people, our products and our collective ambition.
Hollie. Sales Consultant
The culture at Unum made an impression on me straightaway. I met lots of people on my first day and they all knew my name and welcomed me on board. I soon discovered that everyone knows everyone and every time I visited a different office, people were stopping me and asking how I was finding things. It made such a difference.
The Customer Solutions function is really one big collaborative team, and I actually look forward to the days I’m in the office or at an event where I can see my colleagues from various departments across the business. What makes Unum different is that there is little separation between departments and a real willingness to share experiences, be direct and try to be the best that we can be.
Sheena. Business Development Consultant
I have been in customer solutions since I started at Unum as a temp in November 2013. What I particularly like about working here is the opportunity for career progression. Unum looks after its people and ensureswe have the best possible support to develop in terms of our expertise.
To me, company culture is key. Unum has gone through a massive change in the last couple of years and it’s the people that have helped drive the company successfully through this period. Indeed, one of the key reasons I think that Unum is an inspired place to work is the people. They really do make the difference.
Jo. Group Risk Teleconsultant
I worked in Individual Business at Unum from 2006-2012 and re-joined in 2014 in the Group department. I didn’t know much about income protection at the time, but when I researched it I thought it sounded like a fantastic product that I wanted to sell. I was very impressed with the people that conducted my interview too, and I loved the building! All the benefits sounded great, as did the pay and bonus structure and the opportunity to qualify for conference.
The team that I work with are all friends and the management team seem very switched on. My role is really enjoyable and I know that there are people there to support me if necessary. The company genuinely cares about its people and want them to do well. There are lots of opportunities for career progression, and your ideas are very welcome.
Matt. Group Risk Teleconsultant
I had worked at Unum previously when I re-joined in 2015. I just really liked the overall impression I got of the company - they don’t make you feel that you are a just a number, but they do offer you all of the employee benefits of much larger companies. And more. My colleagues are great too. In a sales role, you need to be buoyant and happy to come across well when you are talking to clients over the phone. They help make that come naturally.
I find my role really interesting, and technical enough that you can really add value to the people that you are obtaining business from. The smaller adviser companies in the market lack the expertise and knowledge of Group Risk, so you really feel that you’re helping clients and, essentially, becoming the ‘go to’ person for them. Describe Unum in a sentence? Really good people, great benefits and good rewards for doing well.
