Our technology teams
Global Services Operations
The Operations Engineer is responsible for the operational support of our production infrastructure environment which supports a workforce of over 10 thousand individuals and a customer base of 20 million and growing. Operations Engineer ensures the stability, integrity, security, performance, capacity, recoverability, and efficient operation of our production environment including the integration of our cloud vendor solutions.
The UK Information Security team ensure Unum UK defines, maintains and adheres to the Information Security requirements necessary to operate its business securely, within the strategy and standards required for the Unum Group. The team supports Unum UK’s business in moving to the next stage in its development of its Information Security approach.
Architects are responsible for ensuring the technical direction of applications and solutions both within and across business area portfolios and are strongly aligned with the business strategy. Their skills span Technical and Enterprise architecture and they may work on complex agile deliverables or architecting a new Enterprise asset (including third party/cloud solutions). In both cases, their role is to ensure strategic objectives are met and that they provide the link between the Enterprise Architecture Strategy/Technology Roadmap and the Delivery Teams.
IT Project Management
Project Managers lead critical change initiatives within Unum's programme of change promoting the structured management of such change and engendering a culture in which change is managed and stepwise as opposed to being evolutionary and incremental. They actively contribute to the development of the change management profession by bringing best practice to Business Solutions and the wider organisation by leveraging external relationships.
Systems and Software Development
This includes both systems support and systems development. The delivery teams are accountable for ensuring that there is efficient delivery of what the business needs. They use a mixture of both waterfall and agile methodologies to achieve this. As we move towards fully embracing agile methodologies we are automating our test environment and getting ready for digital transformation.

I re-joined Unum in May 2017, having worked here before. It wasn’t a difficult choice for me to make. The business offers a very interesting product and aspires to become the number one in the UK in providing employers with a ‘back-up plan’. That said, there is a good work-life balance too. It's not all about taking top spot!
I work with a great team and the company is always open to considering new ways of working. There are always exciting projects in the pipeline too. In my opinion, the ambitions of the company will enhance anyone’s career and goals, while adapting when necessary to suit and meet their individual needs.
